The air is dry: drink more water than feels necessary, go easy on alcohol the first night, and keep sunscreen and lip balm on you.
Montana • September 30–October 3, 2026
Where we are, what the season looks like, and the handful of practical things worth knowing before we land.

Bozeman sits at 4,817 ft in the Gallatin Valley of southwest Montana, 93 miles north of Yellowstone — population around 53,000, metro around 119,000, and home to Montana State University.
Belgrade, our base, is the airport town 10 miles west: population about 10,500, elevation 4,449 ft. It was named for Belgrade, Serbia, to thank Serbian investors in the Northern Pacific Railroad.
The valley is walled in on every side — the Bridger Range to the north, the Gallatin and Madison ranges to the south, the Tobacco Roots to the west.
The vibe is college town meets ranch country meets outdoor-gear capital: a walkable historic Main Street of galleries, tasting rooms and fly shops, ringed by farmland with trailheads fifteen minutes out. It was once the “Sweet Pea Capital of the Nation.”
Early October is the quiet shoulder season. The summer crowds are gone, aspens and cottonwoods go gold in Hyalite and Bridger canyons (peak early October to early November), and the first snow dusts the peaks — Bozeman's snowy season statistically starts around Oct 17.

Early-October highs run 57–62°F with lows around freezing.
Pack a puffy, a beanie and a rain shell.
Every trail here is grizzly country, and the Custer Gallatin food-storage order is in effect — never leave food or coolers outside a hard-sided vehicle.
Carry bear spray on hikes, hike in groups and make noise. Deer and elk stand in the road at dusk: drive US-191 and Paradise Valley slowly after dark.
18–22% at restaurants and bars; 15–20% for guides and outfitters.
Montana has no sales tax — the menu price is the price.
Gallatin Canyon (US-191 toward Big Sky) has essentially no signal; the county is installing emergency call boxes. Paradise Valley and Hyalite are patchy.
