Top 10 things to do

Ten things worth the drive, in rough order of how often they get recommended. Hours, prices and drive times checked Sep 12, 2026 — call ahead before you count on any of them.

1

Museum of the Rockies

T. rex central, Smithsonian affiliate, rainy-day hero.

Fits: Thu PM / Sat AM

The largest collection of North American dinosaur fossils in the United States sits on the Montana State campus, along with a planetarium, a living-history homestead and rotating exhibits. It is the one indoor plan worth keeping in your back pocket if the weather turns, and it is genuinely good — budget two hours, more if anyone in the car likes bones.

Where:
600 W Kagy Blvd, Bozeman
Hours:
Daily 9 AM–5 PM
Price:
$20
Drive:
~19 min from Belgrade
“We very much enjoyed our visit to the Museum of the Rockies! Loads of dinosaurs.”

2

Downtown Bozeman Main Street & tasting rooms

Stroll, shop, sip local whiskey.

Fits: Thu PM / Sat AM

Eight walkable blocks of galleries, bookshops, fly shops and bars, with two distillery tasting rooms in the middle of it. Bozeman Spirits is right on Main; Wildrye is a block off it. Montana law caps distillery tasting rooms at 2 oz per person and closes them at 8 PM, so this is an afternoon plan that ends somewhere with a dinner menu.

Where:
Bozeman Spirits 121 W Main St · Wildrye 111 E Oak St
Hours:
Tasting rooms 10 AM–8 PM (2 oz per person, Montana law)
Price:
Free to wander
Drive:
~16 min from Belgrade
“A lively, vibrant downtown with much to see and do.”

3

Palisade Falls, Hyalite Canyon

An 80-ft waterfall at the end of a paved half-mile.

Fits: Fri daytime / Sat AM

The most reward per step anywhere near Bozeman: a paved, mostly gentle path up to a columnar-basalt wall with water falling down it. About 1.1 miles round trip and 240 feet of gain, with a vault toilet at the trailhead. It is a fee site, and it pairs naturally with a lap around Hyalite Reservoir on the way back.

Where:
Hyalite Canyon Rd, Custer Gallatin National Forest
Hours:
Daylight hours · 1.1 mi round trip, 240 ft gain
Price:
Recreation fee site
Drive:
~69 min from Belgrade
“Uphill but easy stroll to an epic waterfall.”
Stephen D · Tripadvisor ↗ · 4.7/5
4

Hyalite Reservoir

Mirror lake, canyon drive, picnic pavilion — pair it with Palisade Falls.

Fits: Fri daytime / Sat AM

A high mountain reservoir ringed by larch and spruce, with pull-outs, picnic shelters and a shoreline path. In early October the water goes glassy in the morning and the canyon drive up is half the point. No entrance fee, and it is the same road as the falls, so treat the two as one outing.

Where:
Hyalite Canyon Rd, south of Bozeman
Hours:
Daylight hours
Price:
No fee
Drive:
~55 min from Belgrade
5

College "M" & Drinking Horse Mountain

Two quick summit hikes, one parking lot, valley-wide views.

Fits: Fri daytime / Sat AM

The "M" climbs to the big white letter above the Bridger foothills — one steep mile straight up, or a 3.6-mile switchbacked loop, about 750 feet either way. Drinking Horse is the friendlier 2.2-mile loop across the road, 700 feet of gain. Same trailhead parking, so split the group by ambition and meet back at the cars.

Where:
Bridger Canyon Rd (MT-86), north of Bozeman
Hours:
Daylight hours
Price:
Free
Drive:
~25 min from Belgrade
“Amazing views from the flat path and at the summit!”

6

Bozeman Hot Springs

Twelve pools, 59°–106°F, ten minutes from the cabins.

Fits: Thu PM

The closest soak to Belgrade and the easy answer on a cold evening: a dozen indoor and outdoor pools across a wide temperature range, plus saunas and a steam room. It is the practical alternative to the longer drives out to Norris or Chico if the day already ran long.

Drive:
~10 min from the cabins
7

MAP Brewing

Lakeside patio beers with the Bridgers behind.

Fits: Thu PM

A big glassy taproom on the edge of a pond north of town, with a patio that looks straight at the Bridger Range and a kitchen that goes well beyond pretzels. It is the most scenic casual beer in the valley and it is on the Belgrade side of Bozeman, so it barely costs you any driving.

Where:
510 Manley Rd, Bozeman
Hours:
Daily 11:30 AM–8 PM
Price:
$$
Drive:
~15 min from Belgrade
“Views outstanding, food spot on, beers AMAZING.”

8

Livingston downtown & Yellowstone Gateway Museum

Railroad town on the Yellowstone River — good Friday plan after horseback.

Fits: Fri daytime

Livingston is the old Northern Pacific railroad town over the pass: brick storefronts, saloons, fly shops and a small museum in a 1907 schoolhouse covering the valley from the Crow to the railroad to Yellowstone tourism. It is on the way home from Bear Paw, which makes it the natural Friday afternoon stop.

Where:
Yellowstone Gateway Museum, 118 W Chinook St, Livingston
Hours:
Tue–Sat 10 AM–5 PM
Price:
$10
Drive:
~42 min from Belgrade
“A fantastic museum off the popular path...thorough exhibits without overloading you with information.”

9

Gallatin Canyon scenic drive (US-191) to Big Sky

The river road from the movie.

Fits: Thu PM / Fri daytime

Forty-five miles of highway pinned between cliff and river, with bighorn sheep, elk and the occasional moose standing near the shoulder. This is the water A River Runs Through It was filmed on. There is effectively no cell service the whole way, so tell someone your plan and enjoy being unreachable.

Where:
US-191 south from Four Corners to Big Sky
Price:
Free
Drive:
~20 min to the canyon mouth from Belgrade
“Highway 191 south out of Bozeman will take you through a narrow canyon, with the road hugging the beautiful Gallatin River all the way to Big Sky.”

10

Montana Grizzly Encounter

Watch a 1,300-lb grizzly up close, safely.

Fits: Fri daytime / Sat AM

A rescue sanctuary east of Bozeman where bears that could not be released live in a large open habitat. You watch from behind glass and fence while keepers talk through each bear's story. It is small, it takes about an hour, and it is the only guaranteed grizzly sighting of the weekend.

Where:
80 Bozeman Hill Rd, Bozeman
Hours:
October: Thu–Mon 10 AM–5 PM
Price:
$13.50
Drive:
~43 min from Belgrade
“Spent a fun, informative 90 minutes watching playful 1,300 lb Max fling a cow hide around.”
Elnora C · Tripadvisor ↗ · 4.3/5

If you have a whole day

The ambitious add-on

Add-on: Yellowstone North Entrance (Gardiner)

Roosevelt Arch and Mammoth Hot Springs — ambitious, a full Friday for non-riders.

Fits: Fri daytime (all of it)

The original park entrance, the stone arch, and the terraces at Mammoth are about 1 hour 40 minutes each way from Belgrade, through Paradise Valley. Doable only as a whole-day commitment, and only for people who are not riding or fishing on Friday. Entrance is $35 per vehicle.

Price:
$35 per vehicle
Drive:
~1 hr 40 min each way

Skip these

  • Fairy Lake — the road is closed for 2026 reconstruction.
  • Bridger Bowl — closed in October.

Eat & drink

Where to eat around the valley

Backups already in our notes: Bridger Brewing and Riverhouse BBQ.

Bar 3 BBQ & Brewing, Belgrade

Belgrade's own barbecue and brewery, with a Bierhall room for groups.

The closest good dinner to the cabins, and the one with a room big enough for all of us. Brisket, ribs and house beer in a converted garage on Belgrade's Main Street. The Bierhall side is the part to ask about for a group.

Where:
119 E Main St, Belgrade
Hours:
Daily 11 AM–9 PM
Drive:
~5 min from the cabins
“The ribs were as good as any I have had anywhere.”
fsdukejr · Tripadvisor ↗ · 4.3/5

Madison River Brewing, Belgrade

Taproom only — a pre-dinner pint five minutes from the cabins.

A working production brewery with a taproom attached, out on the frontage road in Belgrade. No kitchen, so this is a first stop rather than a dinner plan. Good for a quiet hour before everyone heads somewhere with food.

Where:
20900 Frontage Rd, Bldg B, Belgrade
Hours:
Taproom hours — call ahead
Drive:
~6 min from the cabins

Montana Ale Works

Wednesday's group dinner — see the full venue page.

The old railroad freight building on Main with pool tables, a long bar and a menu that covers everyone. This is where Wednesday night lands, and it has its own page with hours, photos, reviews and directions.

Bourbon

Barbecue and whiskey downtown — see the full venue page.

Smoked meat, a deep whiskey list and a room that can take a crowd. Already in the plan as a backup dinner; the venue page has the details.

Feast Raw Bar & Bistro

Oysters in Montana, which is funnier and better than it sounds.

A small bistro near the university doing a raw bar, seafood and a short, careful menu. Dinner only. Call ahead for parties of seven or more — the room is not large.

Where:
270 W Kagy Blvd, Ste C, Bozeman
Hours:
Daily 5–9 PM
Drive:
~19 min from Belgrade
“Ambiance, service, food - 5 star! Everything we had was delicious.”
kmarie · Tripadvisor ↗ · 4.7/5

Blackbird Kitchen

The nice dinner on Main Street — book it on Resy.

Wood-fired Italian in a small downtown room, the sort of place that fills up on a Friday. Reservations go through Resy and are worth making now rather than later.

Where:
140 E Main St, Bozeman
Hours:
Daily 4:30–9 PM
Drive:
~16 min from Belgrade
“Every dish was excellent—fresh, flavorful, and beautifully prepared.”
Paul Conrad F · Tripadvisor ↗ · 4.4/5

Gil's Goods, Livingston

Pizza and salads in Livingston — the Friday post-ride stop.

A bright corner restaurant in downtown Livingston doing wood-fired pizza, big salads and breakfast. It is the obvious place to eat if the horseback group wanders into town afterwards.

Where:
207 W Park St, Livingston
Hours:
Daily 11 AM–9 PM
Drive:
~42 min from Belgrade
“The pizzas and salads were devoured by all!”
SkolVikings · Tripadvisor ↗ · 4.4/5

Corral Bar, Steakhouse & Motel

Roadside steak and burgers in Gallatin Canyon — first come, first served.

A genuine canyon roadhouse halfway to Big Sky, with big plates and no reservations. Worth building into the canyon drive rather than treating as a destination on its own.

Where:
42895 Gallatin Rd, Gallatin Gateway
Hours:
Tue–Sun 10:30 AM–9 PM · first come, first served
Drive:
~50 min from Belgrade
“The food was excellent, with large portion sizes and incredibly friendly wait staff.”
