The Yellowstone is the longest undammed river in the lower 48, and the Paradise Valley stretch runs between the Absarokas and the Gallatin Range. Early October is prime: summer crowds gone, cottonwoods yellow, brown trout aggressive before the spawn, and overcast afternoons bring Blue-Winged Olive hatches. Expect streamers in the morning and dries when the bugs come off. Everyone needs a Montana licence.
